To help celebrate open access, there will be a screening of The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz. It is an award-winning documentary following Aaron Swartz, Internet activist and co-founder of Reddit who committed suicide in early 2013 after being arrested for downloading millions of scholarly papers from JSTOR. A screening will be held in The CAVE at Goldstein Librray on Friday, October 24 at 3:00pm. Hope to see you there! Here is the official trailer for the documentary: It's that time of year once again! Lehman College library recently put a short video, Just Because You Put It In Your Own Words..., reminding people about the need to acknowledge sources even when not directly quoting - I like the introductory conversation with the three students (where one person is "paraphrasing" another person's anecdote) View article... 1. Leisurely reads and audio books Have some free time? Traveling this summer? Stop in and check out a graphic novel, peruse our books on tape for those long summer journeys, or dive into a new book from the Alcove. Make Goldstein your leisure library! 2. Get your work DONE Writing a paper? Searching for jobs? We have plenty of resources and a very skilled staff of GAs, PhD students, and librarians to help you with whatever you need! 3. Coffee Friday lives on That’s right. Coffee Friday is every Friday even in the summer. 9:30-til the pot runs dry. 4. Just relax The Goldstein is a great place to just relax. Air conditioning, quiet reading nooks, we’ve got what you need. Need a recommendation for summer reading? Just ask someone at the Desk. We’re happy to help! 5. The staff Last but not least, our staff prides itself on its friendliness. Although we will be saying goodbye to three amazing GAs this semester, we will have a few new, but also familiar faces working with us.
Recently US House of Representatives Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan issued a proposed budget whose provisions include elimination of the Institute of Museums & Libraries. While IMLS provides a number of services, of special note is that they provide LSTA funds to Florida's Division of Library & Information Services, who in turns awards them to Florida libraries and library cooperatives and also uses them to support the Division's services. In fact Florida received 8 million dollars in 2014. See more Info here: http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2014/04/legislation/ryans-proposed-2015-budget-would-eliminate-imls/.
AND this affects every library in every state in some way. SAVE IMLS! In response, library supporters have begun an online petition of support. They would like to collect 100,000 signatures by May 3. You can find the petition at https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/release-statement-funding-libraries-and-museums-core-federal-responsibility/6g1tTXHv. If you don't have an account, you will have to create one in order to sign. Pam Doffek, Director, Goldstein Library (majority text provided courtesy Barbara Sikes, Librarian)
