Email: [email protected] Facebook: /GoldsteinLibrary Twitter: @GoldLib These events at Goldstein Library are provided in cooperation with Friends of the Florida State University Libraries and the ALA Student Chapter Come join Pam and the Goldstein Library in The CAVE for the ALA Virtual Conference! The conference is from 9-5pm today! At 11:45 there will be a session on:
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Finding Your First Librarian JobPresented by Megan Hodge, Suzy Szasz-Palmer and Ashley Parker-Graves 11:45-12:30 EDT How can a new library school graduate compete with experienced librarians applying for the same entry-level jobs? What traits are hiring committees looking for? Come find out, and ask our panel of public and academic librarians any other burning questions you have about the hiring process for entry-level librarian positions but have been too afraid to ask. This and much more will be presented during the virtual conference! So, I've been "at conference" all day...The ALA Virtual Conference. One of the morning sessions was on Maker Spaces. While I've been at the fringes of MakerSpaces for a couple years (offered Goldstein for a local MakerSpace meeting location) I didn't think much about it. The presenter was presenting the ideas of what (primarily) public libraries can do; arts, crafts, technology, teens, robotics etc. It SUDDENLY occurred to me that Goldstein has been a MakerSpace before the term came into vogue. We've been making the Goldstein for 8 years. We've painted, repurposed furniture, been an art display space and art collection area. I teach my staff (Grad Assistants who work while in MLIS program and then move on to "real" jobs) how to make things every semester. "we've" learned how to paint and spackle, how to use chalkboard and whiteboard paint, repair books, make and paint stencils, make furniture from excess wooden shelving and just this semester how to use glass frosting paint to create private areas. However, if you can't be a MakerSpace library, rest with a cup of tea and check out these (definitely not MakerSpace) libraries: http://www.mentalfloss.com/article/51788/62-worlds-most-beautiful-libraries Here at Goldstein, we're always trying to keep you updated with the most current events and dates you need to know. Well, if you're looking for an excuse to eat well for the entire summer, then look no further: July is (unofficially) STUFF YOUR FACE Month. Come by the Goldstein and see our display of books dedicated to the food you love!
It may be in the 90's outside, but it's frosty here at Goldstein.
Pick out one of your favorites and see if you can spot our snowflakes from a galaxy far, far away! This is what happens when a librarian drinks too much coffee, gets to the library, and then has to answer an impossible reference question. Reason #1: PeaceThe Goldstein is a great place to come & relax, read, study, or just chill out with some books. Bonus: if you want help finding a book or need a recommendation, we'll help you find just what you need. Double Bonus: The CAVE is open a LOT this summer. Come by (or make a reservation) and watch your favorite TV Show or Movie on our big screen! Reason #2: Summer Reading is the COOLESTSeriously, don't you remember all of the cool kids taking some time out to read when they were younger? We do. And that's why we've got a jammin' collection of popular fiction for you -- anything from The Perks of Being a Wallflower to The Watchmen. Those are amazing books, and guess what -- they make great shade! Just hold one of them over your face (but in front of the sun). Reason #3: FREE COFFEE FRIDAYSThat's right -- we feed your coffee addiction EVEN IN THE SUMMER! Free coffee on Fridays from 8:15 AM til the pot runs dry! Come by and get some warm brew! Reason #4: Get Your Research DoneWorking hard on that Dissertation or Thesis? Need to get some quiet or some expert help on finding sources? The Goldstein is the place for you! We've got great resources, a knowledgeable staff of 6 GAs and 2 Librarians, and the ability to help you get the citations you need for your big paper. Come by and ask for some help -- we're excited to assist you! Reason #5: Denny's is OpenOK so this isn't technically the Goldstein, but the Denny's, which is right around the corner from us, is open from 10-5 pm all summer. Come by and check out a book, then head to Denny's. Or, get some grub at Denny's and bring it to the Goldstein. Either way, it's a winning combination! |
